Maurice McGinley holds a PhD in Human–Computer Interaction from Murdoch University and a BA in Philosophy from McGill University. He is listed as an inventor on four patents, including two related to Electronic Program Guides, and received a 2004 Australian Safer Communities Award for his work on Public Emergency Warning Systems.
