Experience is the Consciousness of phenomena, which phenomena might take forms including sensing, observing, imagining, reflecting, considering, interpreting, evaluating, talking, learning, and others.
Experience is the criterion of Reality — the only medium through which Reality presents itself.
The Past and the Future appear, as memory or anticipation, only in the Present.
Thus, the Present contains and sustains all that is Real.
To experience a phenomenon is to recognise it, to allow it into your consciousness. In this way, Experience reflects Choice.
To experience something means to be present for it. We talk about experiencing something second hand, but it's really not the same thing. The delicate hint of rosewater in Turkish Delight — as much scent as taste — however vividly or precisely described, must be experienced to be understood, and experience can only happen when we are present.
As much as a map, painting, or book may help us imagine a landscape, in reality, we have only experienced the media; the landscape might still surprise us. We can only really know the landscape by direct experience. The experience of the map or painting or book is the experience of that thing, with its own value and meaning.
Presence is an important concept. Presence is the source of experience which is the source of reality. We can't really experience anything we are not present for, and experience is the ultimate test of reality. Presence, Experience, and Reality spring from one another, different facets of the same gem, inextricable.
Past and Future are similarly bound to the Present. If this living instant were to explode into existence — into experience — freezing time like a flashbulb going off in the darkness, we would see that Past and Future reside in the Present. Our only experience of Past or Future is in the Present. The only reality of Past or Future lies in the Present. And implicit in the Present, is our presence.
A person who dreams of the Northern Lights as they sleep through a tornado does not experience the tornado any more than they have experienced the Aurora Borealis.
Like books, memories are real but their contents not. The reality of an image is easily mistaken for the reality of the thing imagined. The most faithful account or recollection, however true, is not real. Reality is what we experience consciously and without mediation.
Experience requires cognisance. Although we may experience unconsciousness, the phrase "unconscious experience" does not resolve into a meaningful concept.
Making sense
Empirical reality is based on the evidence of data — sense data, in humans. The data only exists in experience, which is to say that information of which we are unaware is not information.
By "phenomena" we mean the experience of data, which data may take forms beyond the empirical, including psychological, spiritual, speculative, quantum, or any other conceivable form.
If we refer to "a possibility of a phenomenon", only the possibility is experienced and therefore real, not the phenomenon.
