When we pay attention — attend — to something, we bring it out of obscurity, defining and distinguishing it against what it is not. We place it, locating it in our experience, with reference to other elements of reality; and the significance of the thing is its connection with the other elements of reality. To attend to something is to give it prominence; attention manifests care, which is love.

The mother and the child are defined by their relationship. The mother without the connection to the child is not a mother but something else, defined by other relationships. In love, individuals find themselves as they find their place in the world. Finding oneself is to find one's place in the world. Love brings parts together into a whole.

Understanding starts with care — before we make sense of something, we are interested enough to give it attention. Then we identify connections with things we already care about, to find its meaning. Care, attention, and understanding are aspects of love, which makes sense of experience. Love gives meaning to experience.

Consciousness and existence are manifest in experience, which manifests their meaning in turn, through love.

"Manifest" here means all of "made of," "revealed," "demonstrated," "appears," ... it means that it is the appearance and the reality of the phenomenon, a relationship of identity. Consciousness and existence are experience. The meaning of experience is consciousness and existence.

What then is hate? The opposite of love, the background against which love stands out; thus, love defines hate. Hate without love is undefined, chaotic, dissolute, and meaningless. It can be understood only to the extent that it reveals the silhouette of love.

As love is unity and connection, loneliness is division and isolation. Loneliness brings loss of meaning and self regard, which can be restored only in love.
