You know yourself through your choices.
A choice implies a thing not chosen.
You know yourself only by distinguishing what you are not.
To "exist" is to "stand out" from a background. “Is” is defined by “not”.
A drop of water does not exist in the ocean; it must stand out from what it is not.
A written word does not exist until a reader distinguishes it from the page.
A signal does not exist until it can be differentiated from noise.
Existence extends only as far as Consciousness, for nothing can stand out without its illumination.
To recognise yourself is to recognise all that you are not. As you are manifest in your choices, so is all of Existence.
The strongest identities are defined against what they resemble. To recognise oneself is to choose an identity, and in choosing what you are, you choose what you are not. Real Madrid fans are defined by the rivalry with Barcelona's football team; the edges of Protestantism are most clearly drawn against Catholicism; Canadians are united against the States; the individual is defined against society.
Yet, in choosing what you are not, you also choose what you are. When I identify as a football fan, I define myself as preferring football over other sports (e.g., ice hockey); as a Christian, I prefer Christianity to other faiths (e.g., Islam); as a western democrat, I prefer free elections to other government systems; as an individual, I prefer my opinions to those of the masses.
In choosing what you are not, you also give definition—existence—to that which you are not.
